The Very Early Days

The Napier Lighthouse was first lit on 9 March 1874 and the photo below was taken in 1876. One can just see the Lighthouse in the top right corner in the picture below. The whole hillside is still bare without any trees. This early picture of Napier's Marine Parade also shows Bluff Hill and a road that is now Marine Parade.
paradeThe road ended on the corner where Bluff Hill meet the sea which is now the corner of Coote Road. One can also see the prison and the flagpole of the prison. The light was put out on February 12/1947 again.

screen-shot-2020-09-27-at-11.34.00-amHere one can see a photo taken just after the removal of the lighthouse in 1948. One can also see the earthquake damage to the Bluff and the slips that happened after that 1931 earthquake. The biggest slip was on the end of Elizabeth Street. Literally 200 m of Elizabeth Street that connected to Geddie's house on top of the Lighthouse Reserve was lost with a tennis court and a small Pavilion.
